It depends on the size of the project and the desired effect (kawaii style loves big eyes!). Usually 12–16 mm eyes suit a medium-sized teddy bear made from Dolphin Baby yarn. For giants, 30–40 mm will create a spectacular effect.
It is a matter of preference. Bamboo is lighter and warmer, yarn slips less on it, which helps beginners control stitches. Metal needles are faster and more durable for very tight knitting.
